Full Body Waxing Aftercare: What to Do in the First 48 Hours
By Waxflower spa, Eyebrows Threading, Laser Hair Removal | August 4, 2026
We hear it all the time: “Always get my full body wax here. Amazing!” Now let’s protect that smooth result. The #1 rule for the first 48 hours is simple: keep skin cool and low-friction. That means skipping heat, sweat, sun, and water that’s too hot, so your freshly waxed skin can settle down instead of getting irritated.
If you’re heading back out into Freeport, NY heat after your appointment, aftercare matters even more. Downtown Freeport, especially around the Nautical Mile and Woodcleft Canal, can mean sun, humidity, and a lot of “I’ll just pop on a boat” plans. Give your skin a clean, calm 48 hours and it’ll usually stay smoother longer and feel better doing it.
0 to 24 Hours: Cool skin, clean skin, no friction
Right after full body waxing, your hair follicles are open and your skin is a little reactive. Our team generally recommends thinking of the first day as “no extra stress.” Keep things gentle and breathable.
Do this today
- Wear loose clothing and breathable fabrics. Tight leggings, shapewear, and denim rub the skin and can kick up redness.
- If you need to rinse, stick to lukewarm water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Pat dry. Don’t scrub.
- If you feel heat or sting, use a cool compress for 5 to 10 minutes at a time.
- Underarms: skip deodorant or antiperspirant for 12 to 24 hours if you can. Freshly waxed underarms plus product can equal irritation fast.
Skip for the first 24 hours: hot showers, saunas/steam rooms, heavy sweating, tanning, and direct sun. Heat plus freshly waxed skin is a common recipe for bumps and lingering redness, especially in Long Island summers.
A quick note on areas covered: our full body waxing includes legs, arms, underarms, bikini area, and other areas as requested. Those spots don’t all react the same, so err on the gentler side across the board on day one.
24 to 72 Hours: The “don’t ruin it” window for sweat, sun, and saltwater
This is the part people underestimate. Your skin may look calm, but it’s still settling. If you’re planning Nautical Mile weekends, beach days, or boating out by the Woodcleft Canal, schedule waxing 48 to 72 hours before you’ll be in the sun or water.
Swimming after waxing (pool, ocean, hot tub)
We generally recommend waiting at least 48 hours before swimming. Chlorine, salt, and lake water can irritate open follicles. Hot tubs are a bigger “no” because heat plus bacteria is not your friend right after waxing.
Exercise after waxing
Try to hold off on intense workouts for 24 to 48 hours. Sweat and friction can trigger little red bumps, especially on inner thighs, bikini, and underarms. If you have to work out, keep it light, wear breathable clothing, and shower in lukewarm water right after.
Busy commute tip: If you’re coming in from Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh, Baldwin, Oceanside, or Lindenhurst and you need minimal redness for work or school drop-off, aim for an appointment that gives you a true two-day buffer before a big event or waterfront plan.
Also skip strong perfumes, body sprays, retinoids, and harsh exfoliants for at least 3 to 5 days. Freshly waxed skin absorbs product differently, and “tingly” products tend to sting.
Day 3 and beyond: Prevent ingrown hairs the right way (without over-scrubbing)
Ingrowns usually come from a mix of friction, dead skin, and hair regrowth. The trick is timing. Start too early and you irritate your skin. Start too late and the hair can get trapped.
Our simple ingrown prevention rhythm
- Wait 72 hours before any exfoliation.
- Then exfoliate 2 to 3 times per week using either a gentle physical exfoliant (soft glove, light pressure) or a mild chemical exfoliant.
- Moisturize daily with a fragrance-free, non-comedogenic lotion to keep skin flexible and less likely to trap hair.
And please don’t pick at bumps. If something looks like an ingrown, let us know and we’ll tell you the safest next step for that area.
Product rules that save your skin: fragrance-free, gentle, and boring (for now)
This is one of those times “less” really is more. For freshly waxed areas, stick with simple products that calm and protect.
- Moisturizer: choose fragrance-free and non-comedogenic. If it smells strong, wait a few days.
- Soothing gel: aloe or a fragrance-free calming gel can help if you feel warm or itchy.
- Makeup and bronzer: keep them off freshly waxed skin until redness is gone. If you wax facial areas, this is a big one for preventing clogged pores.
- Retinoids, acids, scrubs: wait 3 to 5 days, longer if you still feel sensitive.
When to reach out to our team in Downtown Freeport (and what’s normal)
A little redness, mild tenderness, and tiny bumps right after waxing can be normal, especially on underarms and bikini. Most of the time it settles quickly when you keep things cool and avoid friction.
Reach out to us if you have worsening redness after day two, intense swelling, or anything that feels “off.” And if you ever have fever, a rash that spreads, or pus, get medical care right away. We want you comfortable and safe.
