Laser hair removal aftercare: Exact Do's and Don'ts for the First Week

When someone tells me their laser was “not even painful, ” I want the next part to be just as easy. The single most important rule right after laser hair removal is simple: keep the area cool and clean, and stay away from heat and sun. That one choice, especially with Freeport’s coastal Long Island sun and humidity, protects your skin so you heal fast and get the smooth, clean result you came in for.
First 24 to 48 hours: cool skin, no heat, and keep it simple
Right after your session, I generally recommend treating the area like it’s a little sun-kissed. You don’t need a complicated routine. You need calm skin.
Quick first-day checklist: cool compresses (not ice directly on skin), gentle cleansing, pat dry, then a plain fragrance-free moisturizer or aloe gel.
Do this today
- Use a cool compress for 10 to 15 minutes if you feel warm or a little puffy.
- Cleanse with a mild, fragrance-free wash. Lukewarm water only.
- Wear loose clothing over treated areas so you don’t trap heat or rub the skin.
Skip this for 24 to 48 hours
- Hot showers, baths, saunas, steam rooms, heating pads.
- Intense workouts that make you sweat a lot. Freeport humidity makes this irritation worse, fast.
- Perfumed lotions, body sprays, and deodorant directly on treated skin (for underarms, I’ll tell you when it’s safe to go back).
Days 3 to 7: the “don’t mess it up” week for sun, sweat, and products
This is the week I see people accidentally irritate their skin because life gets busy. If you’re around Downtown Freeport, South Main Street, or the Nautical Mile, it’s easy to go from errands to boat plans to an outdoor event. Plan like this: keep skin calm, protect it from sun, and avoid anything harsh.
Sun after laser hair removal (Freeport edition)
Avoid direct sun and tanning beds for at least 2 weeks. If the area will be exposed, use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+. Coastal sun hits differently, especially near the Woodcleft Canal. I’d rather you over-protect than gamble with dark marks or prolonged redness.
Hair removal rules during your laser series
No waxing, no plucking, and no chemical depilatories on the treated area during the entire series. That includes those “quick fix” creams. Shaving is allowed, and it’s usually the best option between visits.
If you’re searching “eyebrow threading near me, ” “waxing near me, ” or “brazilian waxing near me, ” keep in mind: if you’re doing laser on an area, I’ll guide you on what to do between sessions so you don’t undo your progress.
Picking, scrubbing, and exfoliating
Don’t pick at the skin. Don’t scrub. And skip exfoliating acids, retinoids, and strong acne products for 7 to 14 days. Gentle wins this week.
Swimming, showers, and beach plans near the Nautical Mile
People ask me this all the time because Freeport summers are social. Here’s the clean answer: I recommend avoiding pools, hot tubs, saltwater, and lakes for 24 to 72 hours after laser hair removal. Chlorine, heat, and bacteria can irritate freshly treated skin.
- Shower: Yes, same day is usually fine. Keep it lukewarm. No hot water blasting the area.
- Hot tub: Wait at least 72 hours, longer if you’re still red or sensitive.
- Accidental swim: Rinse with clean water, wash gently later, moisturize, and watch for irritation.
If you’re planning a boat day or a beach afternoon, I’d rather you book your session a few days before, not right before. That timing makes aftercare easier.
Simple products that protect your results (no fancy shelf required)
Keep your product lineup boring for a week. That’s not me being strict. That’s me helping you avoid random reactions.
Use: fragrance-free moisturizer or aloe gel, gentle cleanser, and broad-spectrum SPF 30+ for any exposed skin.
Skip exfoliating scrubs, glycolic or salicylic acids on the treated area, retinoids, and strong brightening serums for 7 to 14 days. If you’re treating a smaller area with me (our laser hair removal service is 30 minutes, $45), this is easy to manage because you’re usually only babying one zone at a time.
And yes, shaving is typically fine when your skin feels normal again. Use a clean razor and a light hand.
Redness timelines, when to reach out, and keeping your series on track
Mild redness, warmth, or a little swelling often settles within a few hours to a couple of days. That’s normal. What I don’t want you to do is wait and worry if something feels off.

Reach out to me right away if you have blistering, severe pain, spreading swelling, or anything that looks like a burn. I’d rather talk you through it the same day than have you guessing.
If you’re coming in from Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh, Baldwin, Oceanside, or Lindenhurst, don’t hesitate to message me with a quick photo if you’re unsure. I’ll tell you what’s normal and what needs attention.
And if you’re still in research mode, these may help you plan your series:
- what to expect from your first laser hair removal
- laser hair removal vs. waxing in Freeport
- laser hair removal for razor bumps
